Iowa Psychiatric Society Foundation Update

The Iowa Psychiatric Society Foundation’s 2009 fundraising campaign “Plant A Seed” honored the 60th anniversary of the Society. Sixty years ago, a group of dedicated psychiatrists planted seeds to improve psychiatric treatment in Iowa by forming the Iowa State Neuro-Psychiatric Society. Through contributions by current dedicated members the Foundation was able to continue to grow the Foundation’s fund and to hold events to foster relationships with residents at the University of Iowa’s and provide education to administrative staff in clinics across the state.

Resident Dinner

The 6th Annual Resident Dinner was held at the Blackstone Restaurant in Iowa City on September 24th . Forty-eight residents and their spouses/guests plus IPS members enjoyed the great atmosphere and food at the Blackstone. This yearly event has fostered closer relationships with all residents and gives them a chance to visit with members practicing around the state. Thanks to Jerry Lewis, MD, IPSF President and Eric Johnson, DO, IPS Member-In-Training Chair for help with the planning.

Research Poster Display and Contest

The IPS Foundation sponsored its second Research Poster Display and Contest. The IPSF Board believes it is important to promote the research being conducted by residents at the University of Iowa, Department of Psychiatry. Residents were encouraged to submit a poster on their latest research project. Their posters were displayed at the IPS Fall Conference in October. The first place prize winner, Hristina Koleva, MD was awarded the first place prize of $300 for her poster “Differential brain activity in the ventral medial prefrontal cortex and precuneus during perception of full versus subtle emotional expressions in older and younger adults. An fMRI study.” Co-authors: Jatin Vaidya, Sergio Paradiso, University of Iowa” Runner up, Ravneet Dhalival, MD was awarded the second place prize of $100 for his poster titled “A Toat To Healthy Aging; Exploring the Neuroprotective Effects of Wine”. Thanks to Donald Black, MD for assisting with the poster contest.

Billing Workshop

For a third year, the IPS Foundation sponsored an educational program for clinic staff on October 1 in Des Moines. This year the program was renamed “Mental Health Practice Management Workshop” to allow us to provide education to more than the billing staff. While the Payer Panel was still a key component of the workshop two additional topics where included: Information Security in the Psychiatric World and Risk Management Strategies for Outpatient Clinics. Thanks to Julie Warner, Mercy Psychiatric Services and Beth Wede, Dean and Associates for chairing the planning committee and moderating the workshop. And thanks to the entire planning committee for providing the leadership to provide meaningful education: Judy Ripperda, Darlus Wolff, Cathy Cockayne, Koreen Dow, Peggy Liautaud, Jeanne Mathey, Marilyn Palmer, Marie Paulsen, Patty Pulford.
